The Clinic of Vascular Surgery is one of three teaching departments of the Institute and it is a referral center for vascular surgery in Slovakia affording consultations from all over the country. The main activity of the clinic is the surgical management of vascular patients. In all departments of the Clinic of Vascular Surgery diagnosis and reconstructive surgery, mainly of the occlusive and aneurysmal diseases of the peripheral arterial system, are performed. However venous and lymphatic disorders are treated as well.

Diagnosis and management are performed at a very high level according to the internationally accepted standards. In cooperation with the X-ray department The Clinic takes part in interventional and endovascular therapy of vascular diseases.

The number of vascular out-patient department visits is approximately 5,000 per year. The inpatient ward has 28 beds and the number of admitted patients per year is about 1,000. The average yearly number of surgeries is more than 800. The majority of these operations include arterial reconstructions (about 80%).

The main focus for The Clinic is surgery of the supraaortal arteries (average 200 operations per year). The department has a rather extensive experience in the field of vertebral artery surgery. The clinic has good results in the surgical therapy of aneurysms of the abdominal aorta as well. Many other reconstructions have been performed, mainly of the occlusive diseases of peripheral arteries of the extremities with very good results. Recently the surgical team has been performing endovascular therapy of aneurysms of the abdominal aorta.

The Clinic of Vascular Surgery of NICVD is a part of the Department of Vascular Surgery of the Slovak Medical University. This department provides the post-gradual vascular surgical education in Slovakia. The members of the clinical team have been working in scientific research publishing about 20-30 publications.
