Department of general cardiology (DGC) of Cardiological Clinic of NICVD is a base for complex cardiologic and angiologic diagnosis and therapy. Highly specialized cardiologic diagnostic procedures are performed here. Based on these, patients with cardiovascular diseases from all over Slovakia are managed by definitive interventional or surgical techniques. DGC carries out even the complex preparations of patients for complicated surgical procedures and heart transplantation.

There are more than 3,500 patients hospitalized annually utilizing the 86 bed inpatient ward. They undergo complex cardiologic and angiologic examinations and therapy that includes 10,000 non-invasive and around 4,000 invasive interventional diagnostic and/or therapeutical procedures per year.

Besides diagnostic and therapeutic activities of DGC, it also provides cardiologic and angiologic counseling, focused even on medical advice for patients with cardiovascular diseases and their readiness to return to work. Physicians of DGC, mostly highly educated cardiologists, perform specialized non-invasive and invasive diagnostic and therapeutical procedures in other clinics and departments of the NICVD, many of them at the high European level.

DGC is also involved in extensive research programs and takes part in many international multi-center studies. Employees of DGC are also well known for their excellent lectures given during international meetings and for articles published in international journals.

DGC forms a fundamental part of undergraduate and especially post-graduate cardiologic training of cardiologists within the Department of cardiology of Slovak Medical University. It also plays an important role in the education and professional training of mid-level medical staff.
